Use the culling layer to hide the light, look up unity's official documentation if you don't know what the settings do.

You need the shadows turned on in the directional light for the shader to access the depth buffer.

Very, I rewrote some of the code though so it's a bit less fucked.

Also for using this, make sure the directional light has shadows enabled. Put the shader on a cube and toggle that cube on with a trigger set to local only. Alternatively this shader can be used on avatars as well.
